ASMR: Storytelling in Surround Sound
If YouTube success is anything to go by, when it comes to how we like our stories, sit up and take a listen to ASMR.
The What: ASMR: Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response
What is it? For starters, it’s a huge wave of subscribers rushing in to soothe, nurture, induce sleep, listen intently and be tantalised to that undiscovered sensation. Until now.
Gentle whispering, touch, generating sounds from everyday materials, evocative (non-sexual) body language, cheeky playfulness and capturing the quintessence of life are the tools of the trade. Get the picture? Or are you even more confused?
Science hasn’t been able to articulate the limits of the brain. But what has been proven so far is that our subconscious triggers all of our thoughts. When we recall something, feel something, or even want something, we first draw on our subconscious to ‘plan’ our next move. Perhaps that’s the point, we don’t plan much in life, as we respond to surroundings.
Do you ever wonder why music makes us feel something, or how a smell of something triggers a feeling? We can easily explain this away as nostalgia. However, just because we have a pleasurable or nasty memory of something does not dictate why we are drawn to something. Perhaps it’s more subliminal.
The simple truth is we feel, respond and we learn.
You know that feeling you have when you hear or see something and know ‘this is a thing’. Whilst some trailblazing YouTubers have led the way in creating a channel that outperforms any viral world-famous ads, you aren’t too late to get into the action. You may have always wished you started it because it’s so simple. There is no barrier to entry. Be authentic, vulnerable, tell a story and travel back to your childhood memories. Imagine intimacy online, impossible, not with ASMR.
Relax into your surroundings. Live your unique experience.
How does this apply to Entrepreneurs?
Ask yourself: Are you delivering a cacophony of noise or the opus to your customer's lives?
Give it a go, when you think about creating your own organic content.
I’m no expert, but here are some common themes I have noticed.
1. Tell a story
2. Reminisce about things
3. Remember people are funny, not just jokes
4. Capture the simplicity of life, use props
5. Share the silly and absurd
6. Use pauses. Simulate a real conversation
7. Share a secret
8. Be a little excited
9. Constantly use the word ‘You’
10. Remember you are in surround sound, so play to the left and right side of the speakers
Sound can be music, words can delight. We can’t make people feel things, but AMSR might be your new channel.
